Khalid Elgazzar’s practice focuses on civil litigation, employment, civil liberties, human rights and national security law. After developing his litigation skills representing a variety of institutional clients, Khalid decided to broaden his practice into a field that was important to him – the protection of civil liberties and human rights.
In representing his clients, Khalid has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and the Federal Court, as well as bodies such as the Security Intelligence Review Committee, the Licence Appeal Tribunal, and the Ontario Municipal Board. Khalid has also represented Amnesty International and the B.C. Civil Liberties Association before the Military Police Complaints Commission, a body that is conducting an inquiry into the transfer of prisoners by the Canadian Forces to the Afghanistan secret police. Khalid was also counsel in the matter of Abdelrazik v. Minister of Foreign Affairs which resulted in the repatriation of Canadian citizen, Abousfian Abdelrazik, from the Sudan after the Federal Court concluded that Mr. Abdelrazik’s mobility rights, guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, had been unjustifiably violated.
Khalid, who is fluent in English, French and Arabic, obtained his law degree at the University of Ottawa in 2005. Upon graduating he was awarded the Regional Senior Justice Prize for excellence in written and oral advocacy. Khalid also holds a bachelor of commerce degree with majors in both Finance and Marketing from the University of Ottawa where he graduated with magna cum laude distinction.
In conjunction with his work as a lawyer, Khalid continues to be an active member of the volunteer community at both the local and national levels. Khalid currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations, a national not-for-profit organization that advocates for the promotion and protection of human rights. Khalid also acts as a mentor for law students involved in the Pro Bono program at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law and also participates in the Child Advocacy Project, which aims to protect the rights of children with disabilities in the educational context.
When he’s not in the office or with family, Khalid spends much of his time trying to refine his hockey skills at local rinks. Khalid is also an avid snowboarder and soccer player.
